Historically Dahab was a Bedouin fishing village, but, over the years, as Egypt’s Red Sea became a world-class scuba & snorkelling destination and more recently an on-land / off-land adventurer’s paradise, so too Dahab grew into a truly treasured addition to divers and non-divers alike.
Dahab is located on the Sinai Peninsula, approximately 80kms northeast of Sharm-el-Sheikh. It is a bustling little Hippy town, ready to welcome and entertain any free-spirited traveller to its shores. The majestic Mt Sinai overshadows the village, while the desert envelopes it on the one side and the golden shores and oceans of the Red Sea on the other, each with its own intrigue and life-form!
There is also an undeniable cultural attraction that stems from the indigenous Bedouin tribe of the Sinai tied to that of greater Egypt, yet intriguingly, still African. There is a pounding heart-beat in the language, food, music and art, urban and rural ways, all of which is still so much a part of the hustle and bustle of everyday life in and around the village. . . . You will spend only 7 days in Dahab, but that will be enough for this gem to remain in your heart forever.
Attractions in and around Dahab for the traveller, young and old, include: diving, snorkelling, trekking, rock climbing, kite surfing, desert adventures, cultural gourmet experiences, day trips to the local cultural sites, mountaineering on Mt Sinai, market shopping with the most beautiful array of colour and fairy lights by night, day safaris out on the ocean or simply just bathing by the pool, yoga on the beach and free diving. One can literally roll out of bed and find yourself on an endless stretch of golden sands and the bluest of blue oceans. When amongst the locals there is a sensory overload of speech, incense and a Bedouin style music that cannot be ignored especially where food and drinks are being enjoyed. . . . and of course, the permeating aroma of cherry tobacco!
